Paris Landmarks and Monuments

Eiffel Tower Paris
The
Eiffel Tower and the
Arc de Triomphe are two of the most recognizable monuments in the world. But Paris is a virtual museum of landmarks, monuments and places of genuine historical interest. Everyone is familiar with the Cathedral at
Notre Dame and the
Champs Elysees. The thirst for liberty was born at the Bastille, and today it is not only a reminder of the past, but an example of free market capitalism - as one of the major shopping and restaurant areas of the city. Invalides also has a rich history that provides a basis for the memorial that it has become, as are the Place de la Concorde with its 3000 year old obelisk, La Madeleine and the Sacre Coeur Basilica. La Defense is certain to become a "classic", although it is a newcomer to the rolls of Parisian landmarks.
Not landmarks, per se, but still worth a look are the Palais Royal, the
Place des Vosges, and the neighborhood of Saint German. And then there is the "landmark" that began the city, the River Seine - Walk along the banks between the pont de la Concorde and the pont de Sully for some of Paris's finest views.
