Originally built as a temporary attraction for the 1889 World Exhibition, the Eiffel tower was the tallest structure in the world at the time of its construction. An unprecedented technological and engineering achievement, the tower set off a controversy that continues to this day. In fact, public opinion was so strong in the early years of the 20th century that the tower was scheduled for destruction. The advent of radio and the need for a place to position antennas saved the tower, allowing it to become an icon of Paris.
There are three levels, all accessible by stairs or elevator. The view, of course, is most impressive from the top. The second floor offers an excellent panorama of the city, several shops and the Jules Verne Restaurant. The bottom level also features a restaurant, gift shop and a post office, where letters are post-marked "Paris Tour Eiffel", providing a special (and inexpensive) souvenir for your friends back home.
