Centre Georges Pompidou Paris

Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris
One of Paris' newest museums, it has rapidly become one of its most popular. 25,000 visitors a day come to this "house of culture for all" which presents all forms of contemporary art - paintings, film, music, books and pedagogy). Like many things in Paris, everything about the museum was controversial, beginning with the open design of the building itself. Gradually however, it has gained acceptance and popularity among the locals. Its main asset, the Musee National d'Art Moderne, is reached by an external escalator which provides wonderful views of the city. The museum is dedicated to the main trends of 20th-century art from 1905 to the present day. Particularly well represented are Fauvism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Expressionism, various forms of abstract art, and pre-1960 American painting. The collections of contemporary art include exponents of the new realism (Arman, Cesar) and of Pop Art (Warhol).
The centre also houses a public information library, the Institute for Acoustic and Musical Research, the Centre for Industrial Creation, a large exhibition hall, a children's workshop and a reconstruction of Brancusi's workshop.
